Day Trip to Corydon/Scottsburg

Our Granddog, Zoey
Hubby and I kept DD#1's dog last week while she was attending a conference for work.  Because we are kindness personified, we agreed to meet her halfway between her house and ours to return her fur baby.  Turns out, halfway is Corydon, first state capital of Indiana.  Hubby suggested we make a day of it and I thought that was a fine idea.

Following the hand-off, we made our way downtown to the Visitors Information Center.  We picked up a couple of maps and received a lunch suggestion.  Since it was close enough to noon, we decided to start with lunch.

It is a lovely, old building and the food was very good.  I had the Cajun Burger with fries and Hubby had the Chicken Bomb (chicken breast stuffed with a homemade jalapeno popper, wrapped with bacon and covered in bbq sauce).  Our only complaint was something the restaurant had no control over.  We sat next to Typhoid Mary, who hacked and coughed her way through lunch.  It was yucky, to say the least.  We would definitely recommend this restaurant,  I give it 3 stars and Hubby gives it 3.5.
Even though it was chilly, the sun was out so we decided to walk around the downtown area for a bit.  As we were coming into town, Hubby was very excited to see Butt Drugs.  I had no idea why, other than the funny name.  Apparently, this little drug store's commercial caught the eye of Ellen Degeneres and was featured on her talk show.

Our next stop was White House Candy, 317 E. Chestnut Street, Corydon.  This was a beautiful old home which had been converted to a business.  The owner was behind the candy counter and said he had purchased the business about a year and a half ago.  We bought some beautiful truffles for Hubby's mother and a couple of pieces of salt water taffy for ourselves.

We also went to a glassblower but they had taken a lunch break, which was disappointing.  I hope we make it back there sometime so we can see a demonstration.

We headed back to the car and after a little discussion, decided to drive to one of the 4 wineries in the area.  We chose Turtle Run Winery.  It was in the middle of nowhere and when pulling up, we almost decided not to stop.  The winery is hidden behind a dilapidated barn. I'm very glad we decided to give it a try because it was a great stop!  Hubby isn't much of a wine drinker and had no idea what kind of wine to try so the owner/winemaker asked him a series of questions to help him pick out something to try.  A few of the questions were, what kind of beer he liked, what kind of liquor he drank, if he liked salty or sweet foods, if he liked to try new foods and if he cut the tags out of his clothes.  Strangely enough, he helped Hubby find a wine he really liked!

After the winery, we headed to Scottsburg.  Hubby has a friend who owns a campground and we were going to stop in to see it and say hello to him.  Before we made that stop, we checked out Goat Milk Stuff in Scottsburg (per his friend's recommendation).  What a neat place!  It is a family owned and operated goat farm.  They have a farm store where you can buy every scent of goat's milk soap you can think of, as well as lip balm, liquid soap, laundry soap and pretty much any other household item you can think of.  They also have a sweet shop where you can buy goat's milk gelato, cheese and all manner of baked goods.  They also have an area where you can get up and personal with the goats - if you are so inclined.  It was really crowded and a little pricey, but I can tell you the little kids who were there were really enjoying themselves.

Adorable baby goat, notice it's umbilical cord!
After a visit to the campground, we headed home.  It was a beautiful day and we both had a nice time.  We plan to try more day trips like this...we only live once and it is time to GET OFF THE COUCH!
